Bugs Above our Heads!

We kicked off our new theme of 'Bugs Above our Heads' with a LOT of learning!  Leave it to the boys to be interested in bugs!

There are several main themes of focus for this vocabulary this week, all of which we began today:
  • Charactericsts of an insect verses a spider
    • Both have three body parts: head, thorax and abdomen
    • Spider has eight legs
    • Insects have six legs and often have wings
  •  Camouflage is an insect's ability to 'hide' by matching its environment
We used song to learn the body parts of an insect.  It's fast, but the kids liked it so much I heard a few of them singing it later in the day:

We headed outside to perform an investigation as to how camouflage works.  In the courtyard, Ms. Carol spread 2 inch square construction paper 'insects' in various colors through the grass.  The plan was for the boys to each have 20 seconds to run and pick up as many 'insects' as they could find.  I've done this experiment before, and the kids usually 'find' the fewest amount of  green insects, as they are camouflaged well.  Unfortunately, instead of us finding the insects, they found us!  In a flash we were swarmed by mosquitoes, abandoned the experiment and headed inside!  We indeed had bugs above our heads....around and on our heads!  I'm sorry for any bites- we won't head to the courtyard again soon!  Fortunately, the book did a better job explaining camouflage.....
