Bear on a Bike

First, I must send out a HUGE thank you to EVERY family for joining me this morning to learn about our phonetics and phonemic awareness program.  Your support is greatly appreciated.  Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.  I'm so proud of all our kids and the progress they have made with sound knowledge and phonemic awareness.  Way to go, boys!

The book for today- Bear on a Bike by Stella Blackstone.  This story uses several modes of transportation that we didn't have on our Transportation Tree Map, so we added some!  We hadn't thought to add a covered wagon or a raft.  This book also helped us learn lots of new vocabulary.

The blog, Reading is Fundamental, has an online version of the story.  I highly recommend letting your child read it with you online.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to embed the code, so you will have to click HERE through the link to enjoy.
The boys had so much fun making tracks using vehicles and paint.  We noticed how the tracks were different....some were bumpy....some were smooth....some were spaced far apart.  By mixing the colors, we noticed we made purple!

Today we focused on the rhyme -ike.  First, we counted the number of sounds in the word 'bike'.....b......ie......k....THREE- there are three.  Next, we talked about how the Magic 'e' can jump over the 'k' to go at the end of the word (as it usually is found after the consonant).  The kids thought this was pretty cool!  Finally, we used felt pieces to represent the sounds and make words that rhyme by changing the first sound.  I forgot to take a picture of the finished product.  We made the words: bike, tike, like, Mike, trike, and pike.  Rhyming words are such a great way to learn new vocabulary!

Tomorrow, we are off to ImaginOn to ride the train and.......if we dare......a city BUS! What a fun job I have!
