Using very few words (sheep, jeep, thud, mud, heap, cheap), a
tableau unfolds in which five silly yet distinctive sheep futilely
attempt to ride in their jeep. Amusing details-such as the tattoos on
the pigs' arms-abound in the pictures. Apple's expressive illustrations
and Shaw's minimal text make this an extremely clever read-aloud. (Book review)

We read one of Ms. Ellen's favorite books....Sheep in a Jeep! With an adorable simple verse, author Nancy Shaw tells the story of sheep who have to make many driving mistakes, including landing in a mud puddle and hitting a tree. Finally, the give up driving and put their jeep up for sale! The kids laughed along with me at the amusing tale. We learned a few new vocabulary words, too: steep, jeep, heap, leap, shove, thud, tug, shrug, steer, weep, and yelp.
Following the book, we focused on -eep rhyming words using colored felt to represent each sound. I gave the children varying onset sounds and they worked to synthesis each into words. Words included: sheep, jeep, beep, keep, sleep, heap, and sweep. We ran out of time and will add a few more tomorrow.
The kids had the most fun exploring transportation and things that go with wheels by playing with some matchbox cars on a town 'map'. The boys could do this all day!
We didn't get a chance to watch this in class, but here is a quick reading of the story on Youtube, if you would like to hear it again at home.
Tomorrow Ms. Angela returns!!!!! The kids can't wait!
