We are delighted to welcome a new friend, Jack! The four boys were so welcoming, and Jack seemed like he had been with us all year. I can't image an easier transition! Many thanks to all the boys for being so kind and welcoming- thanks to Tucker for 'welcome' gifts for everyone!
We began our new theme of transportation by water today. We read a text with simple, but through information on the types of transportation by water. Of course, I was instructed by all the boys to add each new item to our transportation tree map: ferry, fire boat, sailboat, row boat, motorboat, cruise ship, tug boat, among others. While learning the new vocabulary, we also learned the function of each type of boat. The children were very attentive and quite adamant that each new boat be added to our map!
Next, we made origami boats. I designed this activity as a listening and following directions language activity, but thought it might be a little hard. It did require more teacher support than is ideal, but the kids loved having their own boats. We didn't try, but they may actually float.
Here's a link if you want to make more boats at home.
We tried to watch a short video on tug boats in action, but it wouldn't play. We will try again tomorrow. The kids did enjoy singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat, below and I loved the slower speed of this version.
