It may get a bad wrap, but today's Friday the 13th was great at TSKI TK!
We're keeping an eye on the botched science experiment- it seems that the snowflakes may be, ever so slowly, forming a few crystals. I've decided to leave them in the pot with their 'magic' water over the long weekend to see what kind of progress they make. Just in case, I brought a few extra home and will make some over the weekend. That way the Holloway kids can join the fun, too. So, the 'magic' projects will be coming home next week.
Today was productive. We spent much time focusing on our four Everyday Words and even sang a new song about them. Thus far, the Everyday Words are: the, this, my, and a. Please help your child learn these words by practicing at home.
Our book, Bobby Bear and the Blizzard by Kay Oana, was a blast from the past. In this vintage tale, Bobby Bear, through rhyming text, helps his friends survive a blizzard. We focused heavily on rhyming words.
You may remember that we introduced categories at the beginning of the week, which was seemingly, new for everyone, as all required cues. I'm very, very happy to report that everyone is fully competent with the winter vocabulary words and two categories: weather and clothing. Everyone was able to sort them with 100% accuracy today! Way to go, TK!
After recess (which was cold, but not too bitter, as the sun was warm and the fence blocked the wind), we split into groups. Ms. Ellen did individual assessments and collected data while Ms. Carol provided a few fun activities for the children. Together, the children played a board game, focusing on turn taking and following directions.
Ms. Carol also helped us learn about temperature and how it is measured. Using a large thermometer, the children predicted and observed as it was placed into warm water, cold water and hot water. They watched in amazement as the mercury (or is it water??) made drastic swings to reflect the changes in the temperature. This ever-so-simple science experiment held fantastic language opportunities. We talked about up and down, hot and cold and described the actions of the thermometer. If you have a thermometer, try it at home! Check your child's folder to see his recorded results and be sure to have him tell you all about it!
No school on Monday- have a great long weekend! Don't forget to collect items for the snowman collage and return by Thursday.
