It's cold outside but warm inside! Today we had fun experimenting with coldness by freezing sliced bananas. Afterwards, we noted that the frozen bananas were hard and cold, but still tasted yummy!
Today's book was The Jacket I Wear in the Snow by Shirley Neitzel. In this rebus story, a little girl puts on layers and layers of winter clothing to play in the snow. Following a tragedy (her sled knocks down her snowman), her mother picks her up, carries her inside, and helping her take off all the layers of clothing. It's great for winter clothing vocabulary! She wears a jacket, mittens, cap, scarf, boots, jeans, underwear, socks and a sweater. The children helped 'read' the rebus vocabulary words.
We added two new sounds to our Sound Wall today. The Tip Tapper family, with the two brothers /t/ and /d/ moved in! Now that we have six sounds, we will spend a little time letting these settle before adding more, as the /d/ and /b/ are easily confused. You can talk with your child about the parts of the mouth that work when we say sounds- lips, tip of tongue, back of tongue, throat, etc.
Art was the big hit today. The children were given a large mitten drawn on card stock and allowed to cut out two mittens. Then, using yarn, we sewed the edges together just like real mitten. Each child cut out the eight animals from yesterday's story, The Mitten. Ask your child to retell the story to you, using the animals inside the mitten.
The show-and-tell this week has been amazing, with all the new Christmas toys! We've seen Tyrannosaurus Rex, Beyblades, a new doll, and Buzz Lightyear.
Dress warmly- we will go on a Winter Walk tomorrow and record the signs of winter!
