Snowmen at Night

Before reading our book today, the children hypothesised about the activities of snowmen at night. They all assumed that they don't sleep.  Tucker said they go to a party -I think he's heard this story before-, which opened up tons of ideas about what they do at this party.  What do they do?....."dance, skate, and sing" were some of the guesses.  What do they eat?....."cake and cupcakes", of course!  And my favorite........What do they drink?......"beer", guessed Evan!  Of course, I wouldn't select a book that included drunk snowmen, but it was a good guess!  The children loved Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner.

When a boy observes that the snowman he built the day before now looks droopy and disheveled, he imagines what happened to his snow creation during the night. Soon the boy pictures all the neighborhood snowmen gathered in the park for "ice-cold cocoa," a snowball fight, a round of making snow angels and snowmen races.  No, no beer, but lots of fun!  And, we figured out that the snowmen look droopy because they are melting- not out partying!

We focused on our this week's word family (-at), sound blending and segmenting today in the literacy circle.  I said words with all the sounds segmented, asking the children to identify the word.  It's hard, but we made progress even in our short session today!  Word family words this week include:  cat, hat, bat, mat, sat, fat, splat, and gnat.  We also practiced identifying the first sound (segmenting).  Learning to read is so much fun!

Using our Everyday Words, we made a sentence:  This is a ___.  By adding winter vocabulary words, we were able to create a variety of sentences.  Some even made their way into our journals!  Way to go, TK!

Harry Kindergarten Added to TSGI's Favorite Singer List

As you well know, TSGI is big on song!  For years, we've had a list of only a few musical artists that we love.  It's really had to be added to our list......the artist must have many songs that are simple, upbeat, applicable to the lives of children, and FUN.  However, that maybe about to change......we've found HarryKindergarten on youtube.  Not only do his songs meet all our requirements, but they also have the written words and visual cues!  Check out the Snowman Big & Round song we learned today.  http://www.youtube.com/user/HarryKindergarten#p/search/2/mx8yp_kf5p0  His other songs are great, too!
