Snowball Fight!

We learned this morning that Ms. Cortney had a sick daughter and she wouldn't be able to join us today.  While we missed Ms. Cortney, Ms. Kelly and Ms. Ellen held down the fort.....and rather well, I might add!  We planned activities that were calming and soothing since we were one man down AND couldn't go outside (even a movie), but, as it turned out, we were so busy we didn't even need it!

We began with a snowball fight- see the pictures below!  What fun!  The kids giggled and giggled as they threw snowballs 'cottonballs' at each other and the teachers.......and thrilled to learn it was....PERMITTED!  Even encouraged!  We laughed and laughed!

Then it happened!  Evan's loose tooth just fell out!  We think it's the first tooth from our class to be lost.  We all looked at it- and the new hole in his mouth.  We talked about what might happen at his house tonight!!!???  Ms. Ellen thought it was great fun- ONLY because it didn't bleed!

During our morning music, we introduced the concept of opposites using Dr. Jean's Opposite song.  Opposites included are:  top, bottom, happy, sad, up, down, sit, stand, loud, soft, front, and back.  I will try to send a copy to you.

During our morning circle, we continue to count to 30, sing the months and days of the week, practice sounds, read everyday words, and say the date in the format of day/month/date/year.

Today we chose to do centers instead of heading outside.  Ms. Ellen took math center, where the children played a Mitten Matching Game.  Ms. Kelly led the Reading Center, helping the children to match written color words to the correct color.  Finally, an independent reading and drawing center was the last option.  We had so much fun that we ran into the movie time and bumped it to another day!

But the most fun today was the science/art activity.  Each child selected their choice of colored pipe cleaners.  We cut it into three sections and made it into the shape of a snowflake.  We marched the the kitchen and measured poured water into a large pot.  We put it on the stove to heat while we read Six Snowy Sheep.  As soon as the book was done, the water was boiling- we knew because we heard it!  Everyone watched as we added 'Magic' (Borax) to the pot.  We put in our snowflakes and can't wait to see the BIG surprise awaiting tomorrow!

We ended the day with journals, our story Snow Day, and show and tell.
