Hands-On Winter

We experienced winter first-hand during our Out-and-About to the park.  We looked for signs of winter and found bare trees, 'Splashground Closed for Winter', and a winter wreath on a door.  One couldn't miss all the winter clothing we donned- hats, scarfs, mittens, gloves, jackets, sweaters, boots.....  We were bundled up, but the weather was perfect for today's discussion.  The true highlight was simply playing on the playground at the park- we've only been a few times previously and the children thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of free-choice activities.

Today we introduced a winter poem, Warm Mittens.  Please help your child memorize the poem and begin to point to each word as he says it.  What a fun way to learn literacy skills!

Following a review of the sound 'families', we meet a new family, The Lip Coolers and the brothers, /f/ and /v/.  We looked in a mirror and learned to tuck our bottom lip under before saying these sounds.  For our group, this required some concentration!  Have your child look in the mirror and practice these sounds when you're brushing teeth.  It will become more natural as he practices.  We will continue to practice the set group of sounds and not introduce new ones until the middle of next week.

Today we also sorted winter and summer clothing, identifying each and saying the function and category.  The children enjoyed dressing up and seeing themselves in the mirror.

There are so many fun mitten activities that we will continue them tomorrow with Ms. Carol- mitten measuring, mitten matching, and mitten sequencing.  I can't wait!
