....But He Was STILL Hungry!

Today we switched gears from germs to healthy foods.  Our book of the day was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  The kids knew the story, which was helpful.  We focused on the foods in the story (instead of the butterfly life-cycle……we re-visit this story later this spring when we learn about creepy-crawlies).

During our reading, we used felt-board manipulatives, predicting how many were needed for each day of the week.  We decided if each food was ‘healthy’ or ‘not healthy’.  We counted, added, and graphed each food.  I’ll post a picture tomorrow!   Can your child tell you the story?

After the story, we took small pictures of foods and categorized each into categories on a small tree map.  We will revisit this activity each day this week while keeping the ‘germs’ vocabulary as well.  This makes for many words- more fun!

In preparation for our market visit on Wednesday, we pretended to be vendors, selling our vegetables.  Given only plastic food, money and a cash register, the children immediately knew what to do!  One took the role of the vendor, and the others filed in line to buy a veggie each.  They even switched roles without prompts from me and everyone had a turn.  I even heard words like “customers” and greetings such as “May I help you?”  I was so proud!

Likewise, new manipulatives appeared on the playground- a small bakery with a rounded display case and cash register and a grill filled with bar-be-que supplies.  Again, the children took turns (OK, this time they needed a little help…..) to take the needed roles.  It was great!

After lunch and journals, the children enjoyed seeing today’s story come to life in a short video on youtube.   You can watch it together below.  They asked to see it again and again…..finally I said to ask “Mommies” and I would send you the link.  Here it is!

Tucker came in this morning with BIG news.....he lost his first tooth!  Look out toothfairy!
The kids are already talking about making soup on Friday!  How much fun!
