Today was all about the sense of...SMELL! What a fun, smelly topic! We began with the book, Your Five Senses. It helped us understand the five senses and the organ and function of each.
Today's Book |
After recess, we enjoyed the book: Your Five Senses by Melvin and Gilda Berger. The simple text and clear pictures helped us learn about the sense of smell- including how the nose works and that smells travel through the air. Immediately following, we had a smelly science experiment!
We took turns smelling a variety of household items including: cinnamon, vinegar, cut grass, vanilla, coffee, garlic, and.....Ms. Kelly's perfume! The children described the smells and voted on their favorites. Funny thing....someone liked every smell (including garlic)! As always, we had so many fun experiments planned, we didn't even get to them all!
I am so proud of the children and their sounds. I've said it before, but I really mean it! There has been a definite increase in synthesizing skills in the past two weeks. They are on the cusp of reading! Each child pulled a 'Mystery Consonant' from the box and put it before each vowel, saying both sounds to make a non-sense word. Occasionally, the sounds made a real word! Sometimes we even added a final consonant to make a word with three sounds.
Beginning tomorrow, we will introduce all the sounds that are located on the vowel circle. What a feat! Way to go, TKers....Ms. Ellen is proud of you!
Evan, showing a picture he drew. "That's me smelling stinky dog,....um, poop." Well.....at least he gets the concept! |
Tucker: "That's me smelling the flower." |
Tomorrow we will learn about the sense of hearing. It's going to be great fun!
