We switched OT time slots with the Blue Friends today, so we began our day with Ms. Michelle. What a great way to start the day! She brought an obstacle course that required us to take our shoes off! Her obstacles had a variety of textures that felt bumpy on our tickly feet! We crawled, jumped, threw, balanced, raced, and waited (our turn).
Next, Ms. Michelle rolled out a large piece of paper, gave us each a straw and paint, and let us......BLOW! The kids made beautiful.....well, as beautiful as 'blobs' can be.....art. It was great fun- but most importantly, an excellent sensory activity. Finally, she gave us straws and scissors for us to cut into little pieces. WARNING- there was some talk of cutting .......HAIR.....(but no actual cutting of....). We talked about it at school, but you may want to reinforce that children NEVER cut hair.....or ANY other body parts.
After a cold recess, we read the book Ruthie and the (Not So) Teeny Tiny Lie by Laura Rankin to begin our discussion of emotions. Ruthie loves to collect tiny objects, so she is delighted when she finds a small camera on the playground. When Martin declares that he lost it on the playground, Ruthie lies and says it's hers. Later that night, she feels nervous and sad about not telling the truth. The next day, she corrects her mistake by telling the truth. You can hear the story at the link below. The children were quick to come up with a list of many emotion types (happy, sad, angry, mad, silly, hungry, bored, etc.). We will continue the emotion theme all week.
Today is the 99th day of school! To celebrate, we made 100 counting dots. Counting together, we put 10 dots of one color in 10 different circles on one large sheet of paper. It was great math practice- counting by 10s AND to 100 and made a really cute art project, too.
Can you believe it......tomorrow is the 100th day of school!
