Germs Make Me Sick!

The last day of a weekly theme is always so busy....there are too many good communication activities and we don't want to miss any!

Today was no exception.  Our book today was Germs Make Me Sick by Melvin Berger.  This text is long and difficult, so we shortened it when needed to maintain attention and comprehension.  You can experience the book first hand with the Reading Rainbow link below.  We learned a few new words and added facts to our Germ Tree Map.  We each took turns 'reading' the map.  The kids are getting really good!

We also enjoyed a through review of our sounds.  Each day, the children pull a consonant from our 'Mystery Sound' box.  Then, they have to add it to each of the three vowels, sounding out each nonsense word.  For example, if a child pulls out a /b/, then they add it to 'ee' to say 'bee'.  The other two vowel sounds are /o/ (as in Bob) and 'oo' as in 'boo.  You can help by having your child play sound games using the rhyme 'fee, fi, fo, fum'.  Change the initial sound to other sounds, such as 'thee, thi, tho, thum' or 'kee, ki, ko, kum'.  The kids get a kick out of this sound play.

Continuing our work on categories, we spent time sorting germ vocabulary words into two groups:  healthy and not healthy.  We will continue to add to this activity as the monthly theme gives us new vocabulary- fruits, vegetables, exercise and emotions.

During lunch, we played a Reading Rainbow movie called, 'Germs Make Me Sick'.  Yes, it was a blast from the past...complete with LeVar Burton......but good none the less.  Here is a link if you are interested....
